Uinta County, Wyoming: demographics

Uinta County is located in the U.S. state of Wyoming. The center of Uinta County is positioned at 41.283917 N latitude and 110.599878 W longitude (decimal degrees). The county was founded in 1869 and its county seat is Evanston. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2087.56 square miles (5406.76 km²); 2081.66 square miles (5391.48 km²) is land and 5.90 square miles (15.28 km²) is water.

Uinta County had a population of 20617 according to the 2008 U.S. Census estimates⁽¹⁾. The numeric change in resident total population from 7/1/2007 to 7/1/2008 was 462. The population change between 2000 and 2008 constitutes 4.63%. The detailed demographic indices for the county are presented in the table below.

At the 2000 Census, there were 19,742 people, 6,823 households, and 5,147 families residing in Uinta County. The population density was 9.48 people per square mile (3.66 per km²) of land area. The median age of population was 31.4. Males comprised 50.93% of total population and had a median age of 30.6, while females constituted 49.07% of total population and had a median age of 32.2.

In Uinta County the population was spread out with 33.46% under the age of 18, 14.94% from 18 to 29, 31.72% from 30 to 49, 12.90% from 50 to 64, and 6.98% who were 65 years of age or older. The population under 20 years old constituted 36.88% of total population, 52.64% of them were males while  47.36% were females.

The racial structure of Uinta County was 94.32% White, 0.11% Black or African American, 0.87% American Indian and Alaska Native, 0.27% Asian, 0.07% Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, 2.86% from some other race and 1.50% from two or more races. 5.34% of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The average household size was 2.84. One person households account for 20.87% while two or more person households account for 79.13% of all households in Uinta County. Households with married couple families were 61.16%, female householder with no husband present were 9.92%, male householder with no wife present were 4.35%, and non-family households were 3.69%. Married-couple family households with own children under 18 years were 33.90% while those with no own children under 18 years were 27.26% of all households. Households with one or more people 65 years and over comprised 14.08% of total households.

Of total households in Uinta County, 91.82% were English speaking households, 5.95% - Spanish speaking households, 1.56% - other Indo-European language households, 0.51% - Asian and Pacific Island language households, and 0.16% - other language households.

The average family size was 3.31. Married-couple families with own children under 18 years were 44.94% and those with no own children under 18 years were 36.14% of all families in Uinta County. Other families comprised 18.92% of all families.

In 2000 there were 8,011 housing units in Uinta County. The density of housing units was 3.85 housing units per square mile (1.49 per km²) of land area. Housing units occupied by owners account for 64.11% while those occupied by renters account for 21.06% of total housing units. 14.83% of all housing units were vacant.

There were 9,236 workers 16 years and over in Uinta County in 2000; 51.10% of them were working in their place of residence, 25.22% were working outside their place of residence, while 23.68% of them were not residing in a place of the county. Of total population 16 years and over in labor force in the county, male were 55.11% while female were 44.89%.

The 1999 median income for a household in Uinta County was $44,544 and the median income for a family was $49,520. The per capita income for the county was $16,994. About 9.88% of the population had an income below poverty level. Out of the total population, 9.38% of those under 65 years, 0.29% of those from 65 to 74 years, and 0.21% of those over 74 years were living below the poverty line. The median real estate tax in the county was $617.
